Suspension Insulator

Overview

Transmission lines on steel towers supported by suspension insulators
Insulators are critical to the safe and stable distribution of power generated by power plants. Suspension insulators support transmission lines on steel towers and isolate the lines from the towers. They play a key role in the safe supply of electricity.
Depending on the transmission voltage and the environment in which they are used, suspension insulators are used in two or more configurations.

Features

Saa Grid suspension insulators are successfully used in more than 100 countries/regions, especially in the majority of UHV, EHV and HVDC transmission lines.
Can be used at any voltage and contamination level by varying the number of insulators
High reliability through accumulated technology
Excellent long-term performance

What is Suspension Insulator?

Definition: A suspension insulator protects overhead transmission lines like a conductor. Usually, it is made of ceramic material and consists of a single or a string of insulating discs suspended from a tower. It works above 33KV and overcomes the limitations of the following pin insulators.
Its size and weight increase above 33KV
Difficult to handle and replace unit insulators
Replacement of damaged insulators is expensive.

Properties of insulator material

The following are the properties of any insulator material that
They should be mechanically strong
The dielectric strength of the material should be able to withstand high voltage stresses
Electrical insulation resistance should be high
The material should be free from impurities, cracks and holes
The physical and electrical properties of the insulator should not be affected by environmental changes
Safety factor must be considered.

Construction and work of suspension insulator

It consists of two main parts, which are the cross arm and the insulator with the number of metal links (also called disc insulator). Suspension insulators or suspension strings are developed by connecting several insulators in series with the help of metal links, where the conductor is suspended by the bottommost insulator and the top of the insulator is fixed by the cross arm. This type of insulator is mainly used for overhead lines.

Applications

The applications of suspension insulators are
Mainly used in areas where high voltage is required
generators
Transformers
Electric motors
Railway lines
Wire poles, etc.
